new guidelines to prevent and treat ulcers caused by NSAIDs
The American College of Gastroenterology just released new guidelines to prevent and treat ulcers caused by NSAIDs.
Prophylactic therapy is recommended for high-risk patients. This means people over 60...a prior history of ulcers or GI bleeding...on a high NSAID dose...or taking corticosteroids or anticoagulants.
Misoprostol (Cytotec) is recommended to prevent both gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by NSAIDs. Start with 100 mcg QID or 200 mcg BID to reduce the incidence of diarrhea.
